Yeah, I'm talking about !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! .

You can read the details therein, if you already haven't. A female soldier committed suicide with a self-inflicted gunshot wound while the base was on high alert for an "active shooter." This is very prudent measures, and I'm not criticizing Army procedure (unless it impeded any ability to "talk her down," but that's for the investigators to discover first). What I am criticizing is how it's being reported in the media.

It bothers me because some of the framing of some media outlets reporting this is a sigh of relief that this woman (who apparently was also involved in the investigation of the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , sighting stress as a major factor in Army-related non-combat violence and suicides) only managed to kill herself instead of other people. That as long as the insane only manage to hurt themselves, then we "normal" well-adjusted folks can go about our business after this minor inconvenience and back to !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! .

The implication therein is that not only are people with real mental issues are incurable, but it's in fact preferable if they were to just kill themselves. That sigh of relief that nobody else died is masking the issue that someone still died, that it was likely a preventable death and that sigh allows the collective American/media consciousness to sweep the issue of mental health under the rug again thanks to the banner of "one more dysfunctional dangerous person is no longer a threat to society." The focus will once again be on how police and emergency responders can kill a person faster instead of preventing that person's distraught behavior in the first place.

I don't know how much of a threat this person was (from the article, it sounds like she mostly just threw stuff around and then shot herself), but she wouldn't have been a threat - and she'd still be among the living - if proper attention had been given in the first place. But it seems like that it's just more convenient to wait until someone comes along and starts popping people, and then to pop that individual off in turn.

The biggest fear in my mind - Was she the victim of sexual abuse/assault? Seems like a highly probably cause or perhaps part of the reason for this incident. I really hope they look into this one. And by "they" I mean "not the army".
